Stars Pitch In For Lunchbox Auction

New York, December 11, 2008  - The tanking economy has put a huge strain on food banks, with more and more people out of work and trying to feed their families.  So it was great to see such a nice turnout for the annual Lunchbox Auction, where lunchboxes designed by the likes of Gwyneth Paltrow, Cameron Diaz, Tony Bennett and Martha Stewart, to name a few, were auctioned to raise money for the Food Bank for New York City.  As always, hosts Michael Stipe and Mario Batali rallied a stellar crowd to Milk Studios.  Mike Myers, who in the past we’ve seen slip in unnoticed, happily did his signature Dr. Evil pose with pinky in mouth.  And we don’t know what got into the usually aloof Julia Stiles - she was in an unusually good mood, smiling and laughing all evening.  Piper Perabo, John Ventimiglia, Salman Rushdie, Chris Madden and Emeril Lagasse were also roaming around, looking at lunchboxes.

This event kicked off a one-week online auction where all the boxes are up for auction.  The online auction continues through December 18th at midnight.  Great holiday gift idea!

New York, December 9, 2008 – Ray-Ban, maker of uber-cool sunglasses, celebrated its classic 1950s-1960s-inspired Clubmaster style with a cool party at New York’s Bowery Ballroom.  Indie bands Black Kids, Ipso-Facto and White Williams reinterpreted their favorite ‘50s and ‘60s songs at the legendary music hall for guests including Kevin Bacon, Maggie Gyllenhaal and lovebirds Johsua Jackson and Diane Kruger.  The Gossip Girl stars popped in and chatted about holiday plans.  Chace Crawford will visit his family down in Texas, and Ed Westwick will reunite with old friends in the U.K.   Blake Lively will spend the holidays with her family, and her boyfriend, Penn Badgley, says he’s undecided – he’s considering taking a trip, or maybe just staying in New York City for Christmas day – he’s leaving it until the last minute.

Ray-Ban will also hold Remaster Clubmaster events in Beijing and Milan.

New York, December 9, 2008 –The planet kept on rotating but Broadway traffic came to a standstill at the big, splashy, star-studded premiere of The Day the Earth Stood Still on Tuesday.  Chaos reigned as Keanu Reeves shook hands, posed for photos and signed autographs for fans lucky enough to secure a spot on the red carpet at the AMC Loews Lincoln Square Theater.  Fans' screeching reached a fever pitch when Will Smith made the scene.  His son, Jaden Smith, is one of the movie’s stars, and dad told us he was trying to stay out of the limelight.  “I’m supposed to be letting him do his thing tonight, so I’m supposed to be stepping back,” Will said.  Proud mom Jada Pinkett Smith said that her 10-year-old son had a great time working on the movie.  “I’m very proud of him,” Jada said, beaming.

As for young Jaden, he wasn’t overly concerned with recreating the 1951 sci-fi classic.  “I didn’t really see the last movie, so I didn’t know what I was up against and stuff like that,” Jaden said.  “I think it’s going to be really good,” he added.

Reeves also claimed not to be anxious about reprising the iconic role of the alien.  “I can’t deal with the iconic aspect of it, you know.  I treated it as any other role,” he said.

Kathy Bates, who also stars in the remake, reserved her opinion on how it turned out. “I haven’t seen the movie,” she confessed.  “I’m going to wait and see if I like this one,” Bates said before the screening.

New York, December 4, 2008 – Jimmie Johnson was the man of the hour on Thursday at Marquee, at a party celebrating his NASCAR Sprint cup series victory.  Again - this was Johnson’s third consecutive win.  But also grabbing our attention was DJ AM, spinning and seemingly in good shape after his harrowing plane crash in September.  Fellow DJ Samantha Ronson shared duties – is that what caused her to argue with Lindsay Lohan?  Biggest news to us was Aubrey O’Day claming that she and her female date were lesbians, and are, like, totally upset about the passage of Proposition 8 in California.  O’Day also stood up for animal gay rights, noting that her lapdog, Ginger, who was in her arms, is also a lesbian.

Other NASCAR partygoers, none of whom confessed to being lesbians, included Ricki Lake, Alessandra Ambrosio, Gavin DeGraw and NJ Nets’ Rashad McCants

New York, December 3, 2008 – 18-year-old actor David Kross is one lucky guy – after a handful of roles in his native Germany, he got to play Kate Winslet’s lover in The Reader.  At the premiere on Wednesday, Kross explained how he and Winslet eased the awkwardness: “We were talking a lot about it, and we had a lot of rehearsals of the other scenes, and we did the sex scenes at the end of the shooting, so we knew each other quite well.”

While he said that his friends do tease him a bit about the role, he insisted he doesn’t boast about it.  Winslet reminded us that she herself had an older lover at a young age, actor Stephen Tredre, who died in 1997.  Ralph Fiennes plays the young lover as a adult.  “I’m in the film only for the last 20 minutes or so,” Fiennes told us.  So Winslet looked quite a bit different during their scene.  “There’s an age difference, she had to age up,” Fiennes said.  “So when I play my age of 46, Kate had to play 66.”

New York, December 1, 2008 – New York City woke up from its Thanksgiving holiday stupor on Monday when everyone came out for the premiere of Cadillac Records.  It was bedlam at the AMC Loews 19th Street Theater where reporters were jammed five-deep on the red carpet, and famous folks kept streaming through the doors.

There was Ne-Yo running on in to snag a seat, Akon followed soon after, and Diddy showed up in fur trim and sunglasses – his eyes are sensitive, he says.  Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos came at the invitation of director Darnell Martin – their kids go to the same school!

Jay-Z slipped in, trying not to steal the limelight from his wife, Beyonce, who stars in the movie.  And the cast alone accounted for a whole lotta star power: the brilliant Jeffrey Wright, Adrien Brody, Gabrielle Union, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Mos Def and Eamonn Walker were all at the premiere.  Cedric the Entertainer was late, and he seemed to have a cold when we chatted with him.  But Cedric felt well enough to party late into the night with the whole cast at Marquee Nightclub.

New York, November 27, 2008 – At Macy’s 150th anniversary party last month, company executives wouldn’t spill any information about this year’s Thanksgiving Day parade, so we just had to wait until the big day to see who would ride the floats.  And they didn’t disappoint with none other than Miley Cyrus provoking thrilled shrieks from the kids lining the parade route.

America Idol alum David Archuleta didn’t want to make any mistakes – early in the morning at the staging area on Central Park West, we watched as he marched over and over again from his trailer to his float.  Practice makes perfect.

There was a distinct country edge in the air this year, with Nashville spawn Cyrus, Trace Adkins and newly minted country singer Darius Rucker riding the floats.  Singers James Taylor and Ashanti joined the fun, as did actress Kristin Chenoweth.  We understand Andy Williams rode in the parade, but we never did find him in all the commotion.

The mood at this year’s Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade seemed more low-key than the past few, perhaps due to the subdued economy?

New York, November 25, 2008 – Ugly Betty’s Mark Indelicato was not a ballet fan until he moved to New York.  “I go to Performing Arts school, so there’s a lot of ballerinas in my class who happen to be my good friends,” the 14-year-old told us at the New York City Ballet’s opening night on Tuesday.  “I love “The Nutcracker;”  it’s a beautiful show,” Indelicato added.  Despite trying out for Billy Elliot on Ugly Betty, however, Mark has not studied dance.  His cast-mate, Vanessa Williams, is a longtime ballet aficionado.  Accompanied by an old friend, Williams told us, “We’ve been going to the ballet ever since we graduated back in the – eighties, shall we say?” She laughed, and said,  “We’re not going to give it away.”  Another ballet-goer, Sarah Jessica Parker, told us that the Sex and the City movie sequel is not yet a sure thing.  “There is an ongoing conversation that is real about it.  I’m not being cagey, I mean honestly, that’s the extent of our progress thus far,” she said.
