Los Angeles, February 28, 2008 – Courteney Cox Arquette’s über-meta series Dirt, about a tabloid editor sniffing out scandals about stars just like her, is back for a second season on FX.  And there she was, dressed down in jeans at the Arclight premiere with hubby David Arquette, avoiding personal questions from, er, voracious tabloid reporters while paparazzi snapped pictures.  It was sort of meta-meta.

Anyway, the buzz is that this season, which begins on March 2, Dirt storylines come from actual celebrity headlines.  We hear that the first episodes feature scandals based on Anna Nicole Smith, O.J. Simpson, Britney, Paris and Alec Baldwin.

Pete Wentz joins Ashlee Simpson at her record release party

New York, February 26, 2008 – We were glad to see that Pete Wentz accompanied his girlfriend Ashlee Simpson to her performance at Manhattan celeb hangout Marquee, because he’s always hilarious, on anything from women’s underwear to nudity.  The Fall Out Boy rocker was kind of mellow at first during Tuesday’s late-night Caribou Iced Coffee-sponsored party, but rocked out once Ashlee started performing songs from her upcoming CD, Bittersweet World.  (Ashlee’s song "Boys" includes the poetic lyric: “Use your head, but not that one!  One track mind!”)  Sporting red hair and her diamond promise ring, Ashlee performed four songs.

New York, February 26, 2008 – An appropriately socialite-heavy crowd turned out for an Upper East Side screening of The Other Boleyn Girl, where star Natalie Portman walked the red carpet and left within ten minutes.  Vanessa Carlton protested as cameras flashed, “I’m not the star of the movie!”  Guests included David Lauren and his girlfriend presidential niece Lauren Bush, designers Zac Posen and Tory Burch, fashion dynasty scions Margherita and Jennifer Missoni and Sports Illustrated swimsuit model Ann V.  Portman was the only one representing the cast at the private screening; costars Scarlett Johansson and Eric Bana weren't able to make it.

Although she didn't stay for the screening, Portman turned up later at the after party at Christie's.

February 8-26, 2008 – We had a déjà vu while watching Janet Jackson at the Nokia Theater for Good Morning America this morning; something about her extra-wide, high-waisted perforated cummerbund struck a note of familiarity.  We realized that every time we’ve seen Jackson in recent weeks - at Grammy parties and the NAACP Awards - she’s been sporting a wide belt that really accentuates her tiny waistline, over a formfitting outfit.  The diva’s weight has gone up and down, and now she’s in shape and petite, and wants the world to know that any photos have not been touched up.

Jackson’s new album, Discipline, hits stores today.

Los Angeles, February 24, 2008 – There’s often a contingent of foreign-born actors up for Academy Awards, but in 2008 Europeans made a clean sweep in the major acting categories, with Britain’s Daniel Day-Lewis and Tilda Swinton, France’s Marion Cotillard and Spain’s Javier Bardem taking home gold statuettes.  (We take the positive view that Hollywood is becoming more inclusive, rather than wonder, like some did at the awards on Sunday, whether Americans have lost their luster.)  Day-Lewis was even “knighted” onstage by fellow Brit Helen Mirren, who won an Oscar last year for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II.

Backstage, Bardem claimed that his date for the evening was his mother.  No word on whether his rumored girlfriend Penelope Cruz got to tag along to all the parties later.  Day-Lewis joked about kissing fellow nominee George Clooney as he made his way to the stage to pick up his award: “I had to kiss someone”.   Backstage, Cotillard truly seemed shocked by her best actress win; her demeanor on the stage appears not to have been an act of modesty.  Swinton also claimed surprise at her supporting actress win.

Baby bumps again had tongues wagging and shutters clicking at the Kodak Theater, with Nicole Kidman joining mothers-to-be Jessica Alba and Cate Blanchett on the red carpet. The Oscar ceremony marked the first major U.S. appearance for Kidman and husband Keith Urban since announcing last month that they are expecting their first child.

Colin Farrell also brought his mom as his date, as did Miley Cyrus. Eternal bachelor George Clooney is still with girlfriend Sarah Larson.
