Jarhead Premiere Almost Derailed
Jake Gyllenhaal at Jarhead premiere
Jennifer Aniston at Derailed premiere
Clive Owen at Derailed
Two, with everything. Peter Sarsgaard orders at Jarhead
Kate Winslet & Sam Mendes at Jarhead
Jamie Foxx at Jarhead

New York, October 30, 2005 – It was dueling premieres in New York on Sunday, with Jennifer Aniston battling her former The Good Girl costar Jake Gyllenhaal for red carpet dominance. Naturally, we went to both.

The biggest news at Derailed: no Vince Vaughn present on the red carpet, inside the theater or at the after party. (OK, we’re obsessive.) Aniston didn’t give interviews to us gossipy types; we can’t imagine why. Her Derailed costars Clive Owen, Melissa George, Xzibit and RZA – the two rappers act in this film – were all chatty. “Jen is lovely”, according to, um, everyone who worked on the movie. Harvey and Bob Weinstein introduced the film to the audience, and we learned that Derailed is the first movie released by the newly formed Weinstein Company. We learned that repeatedly. Don’t forget it. Got that? It’s the first one. They’re very happy about that. And proud. That’s Weinstein.

Meanwhile, over at the Ziegfeld Theatre, the Jarhead guys were as dateless as Aniston. Jake Gyllenaal and Peter Sarsgaard were there, but no Kirsten Dunst or Maggie Gyllenhaal. Jamie Foxx was late, but also solo. One guy wasn’t abandoned by his lady for the premiere: director Sam Mendes’ gorgeous wife, Kate Winslet, lit up the red carpet. We noticed Jake’s Brokeback Mountain director, Ang Lee, slipping into the theater for a look.

Fendi: Old Italian
Valentino
Zac Posen puts on the dog
Ashley Olsen

New York, October 29, 2005 – Karl Lagerfeld loves little old Italian ladies, and Saturday night he threw an 80th birthday party for one of his favorites, named Fendi. A fashiony crowd, many in Halloween costumes, partied way down on the tip of Manhattan at the old Cunard Building at 25 Broadway. Designer Zac Posen was theatrical in a top hat and cape, white makeup with a white fox tossed over his shoulder. Valentino was more understated with a mega tan. With cramming for her NYU classes, Ashley Olsen didn’t have time to put on a costume. Karl wore a suit with silver gloves, and we’re not sure if that was a costume or not.

Meanwhile, the birthday girl is not finished celebrating; on Wednesday, she’s opening a new Fendi store on Fifth Avenue.

Springtime on Broadway for Odd Couple
Playwright Neil Simon
Matthew Broderick, the neat one, with wife Sarah Jessica Parker
Nathan Lane, the slob

New York, October 27, 2005 – It was a big night for Broadway on Thursday, when The Odd Couple opened with Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick playing to a packed house. First to take in the revival starring The Producers’ magic duo were Jerry and Jessica Seinfeld, Kathleen Turner, Regis and Joy Philbin, Martin Short, and, of course, Broderick’s wife, Sarah Jessica Parker. The Odd Couple first hit the boards 40 years ago, and playwright Neil Simon, still going strong, stepped onto the stage for a bow. The Odd Couple sold out its entire run, but we’ll all get the chance to see Lane and Broderick in December, when the movie version of The Producers hits theaters.

Bullock's Biker Sore Thumb in Fashion Crowd
Melania Trump's bump
Jesse James' tattooed hand emerges from tux
Meryl Streep
Karen Elson, aka Mrs. Jack White
Reluctant Jesse James & wife Sandra Bullock

New York, October 27, 2005 – There were lots of surprises at the always glamorous Fashion Group International’s Night of Stars this year. Proudly expectant Melania Trump bravely paraded her bulging belly amidst a fashion crowd to which fat is merely a hazy concept, including Anna Wintour and Naomi Campbell. Melania had plenty of moral support from the Trump clan; Donald, his hair, son Donald, Jr. and daughter Ivanka all turned out.

Another with a rumored bun in the oven was model Karen Elson, recently married to White Stripes rocker Jack White. Elson, er, didn’t especially look preggers, but maybe it’s early.

Sandra Bullock, who has reportedly denied rumors that she’s pregnant, brought her biker TV star husband, Jesse James, who clearly was not used to being at a formal, frothy fashion ball. Jesse looked terrific in his tux, but refused to even pose for photos with his wife; we snapped him on his way in.

Some surprises at the Night of Stars were less, well, surprising, but certainly delightful, like the presence of fashion legends Alberta Ferretti and Valentino, who accepted an award from Meryl Streep.

New Dad Prince Albert at Princess Grace Awards
Mikhail Baryshnikov
Liza Minnelli
HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco

New York, October 26, 2005 – This has been quite a tumultuous year for Prince Albert II of Monaco, with the revelation that he has an illegitimate son with a flight attendant, and the death of his father, Prince Rainier III. Nevertheless, Albert maintained the tradition of honoring his late mother by helming the Princess Grace Awards gala in New York. Mikhail Baryshnikov received the first-ever Prince Rainier III memorial award. This year’s awards gala drew quite a mixed crowd from the arts. Alan Cumming, Celeste Holm, Julianna Margulies and Edie Falco all graced Cipriani’s for the dinner. Larry King hosted and Natalie Merchant performed. Liza Minnelli, clad in a floor-length fur coat, has clearly avoided animal rights activists so far.
