Los Angeles, January 23 – Apparently, the Munster family was once a neighbor on leafy Wisteria Lane, the street where a bunch of Desperate Housewives currently reside. ABC wrapped up a week of press tours for the TV Critics Association with a party on the Universal Studios set, and Housewives stars Eva Longoria, Felicity Huffman, Marcia Cross and Nicollette Sheridan hosted. John Stamos, star of a new ABC comedy called Jake in Progress, arrived at the red carpet, and told us that he had to pee really badly. We pointed out a bathroom nearby, but he’s apparently had this condition on Wisteria Lane before. “There’s a really nice bathroom in the Munster house. I’ll just do the [press] line really fast, and then go there.” Stamos plays a playboy in his new series, so we see he’s working on his pickup lines. |

Annual Producers' Guild Awards |

Los Angeles, January 22 – We sure looked ridiculous in our lime green pants, white shoes and sun visor at Culver Studios on Saturday. Turns out, the PGA Awards have nothing to do with golf. The Professional Golfers’ Association of America shares their monogram with the Producers’ Guild of America, which honored people who produce all those films that win all those awards at all those other awards programs that have been running at a clip of several per week lately. Generally considered a reliable harbinger of Oscar winners, the PGA voted The Aviator the top film, with the award to producers Graham King and Michael Mann. Leonardo DiCaprio wasn’t named, although he’s an executive producer on The Aviator. But Leo was there anyway. He supposedly spent years getting the Howard Hughes biopic made, and has been pushing aside his usual aversion to press to promote the flick. Will Smith’s date was Jeffrey Katzenberg. Ashton Kutcher was solo and didn’t say much. Eva Longoria was looking forward to the Desperate Housewives block party planned for later that evening. Inside the Actors’ Studio's James Lipton was thrilled when we asked him to pose with Morgan Freeman, who admonished us that we should know better than to ask him to remove his sunglasses. Those producers know how to get things done. They placed the food table directly outside the press area, figuring that the celebrities would go there, guaranteeing coverage. |

New York, January 21 – There wasn’t a sip of wine or even a pretzel, but an art opening on frigid Friday night was so packed that guests had to wait for others to leave before they could enter. What kind of art exhibition draws a crowd requiring velvet ropes? Why, photographer Sante D’Orazio’s photographs of Pamela Anderson in the nude, of course. The crowd at Stellan Holm Gallery was typical: artists, socialites, hipsters, lots of European accents. With the arctic weather and everybody covered with so many layers of clothing, it was hard to recognize rock princess Debbie Harry, architect Richard Meier, John McEnroe, artist Julian Schnabel and his daughters Lola and Stella, legendary gallerist Tony Shafrazi, and actors Julianna Margulies and Fisher Stevens. Fashion designer Cynthia Rowley exposed her due-any-minute child to Pam au naturel. As the party was waning, with most guests already gone, Robert Downey, Jr. and fiancée Susan Levin slipped in unnoticed. Downey wore tight leather pants; she seemed shy – or maybe she was unnerved being surrounded by images of a naked Pamela Anderson. At 8:20 p.m. they were turning the gallery’s lights off when an SUV pulled up, and the blonde who emerged turned out to be Ashley Olsen. She was immediately invited in, but hesitated once inside, when she saw that everyone was gone. So Ashley, her black coat covered with what looked like cat hair, took a quick look around, and then left. You can see all of Pamela Anderson’s bits (but probably not Ashley) through March 5, 2005, at Stellan Holm Gallery, 524 West 24th Street, NYC. 212-627-7444. |

New York, January 18 – “Don’t scream. You’re making me nervous”, Lawrence Fishburne said to members of the press who had gathered at a private screening of his out-this-week movie, Assault on Precinct 13. So we became calm and orderly, until Fishburne shrieked a greeting when hip-hop star Ja Rule arrived. Fishburne ignored it when someone inevitably piped up, “Don’t scream. You’re making me nervous.” Ethan Hawke and John Leguizamo are also in the action film, and both kept the decibel level down, so as not to assault Fishburne’s ears. Photos by Dan Herrick |
