Tribute to Christopher Reeve

Larry King   Matthew Broderick   Teresa Heinz Kerry

New York, October 29 – Schoolchildren in Halloween costumes on the streets near Lincoln Center made a strange backdrop for black-clad mourners streaming into The Julliard School to celebrate the life of actor Christopher Reeve. The actor’s widow Dana Reeve and his close friends Robin Williams, Meryl Streep and Glenn Close were among the speakers at the two-hour service. Williams and Christopher Reeve were roommates while students at Julliard. Those paying respects included Teresa Heinz Kerry, Michael J. Fox, Susan Sarandon, Hillary Clinton, Kim Cattrall, Liam Neeson, Mike Nichols, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., Katie Couric and Larry King. An activist for paralysis research and advocate of stem cell research, Reeve passed away October 10. He had three children.

Fashion Group International's Night of Stars

Kate Hudson & Stella McCartney   Usher & Giorgio Armani   Julie Andrews

Martin Scorsese, Giorgio Armani & Michelle Pfeiffer   Marc Jacobs & Lil' Kim

New York, October 28 –This was Giorgio Armani week in New York, with the designer restaging his Milan fashion show and also being honored by The Fashion Group International at their Night of Stars. And the non-profit Fashion Group really lines up the stars for this annual bash. Kate Hudson, Martin Scorsese, Michelle Pfeiffer, Julie Andrews and Gretchen Mol presented awards. In addition to Armani, designers Stella McCartney, Marc Jacobs, Helmut Lang and architect Billie Tsien were honored.

Paging Sofia Coppola. Your muse-ship is fading. Marc Jacobs brought Lil’ Kim, who was uncharacteristically covered up in a red Jacobs dress. Did anyone find out who the guy with Chloe Sevigny was?

Usher, Heidi Klum and Seal, Desperate Housewives' Eva Longoria, French actress Eva Green (The Dreamers) and designers Zac Posen, Esteban Cortazar, Carolina Herrera, Cynthia Rowley, Pierre Cardin and Bradley Bayou flitted around the elegant Cipriani. In this crowd, we had to breathe deeply to keep from being immobilized by a severe attack of inferiority.

Thanksgiving 2004
Colin Farrell with wax image
Mariah Carey serves up Thanksgiving grub
Fantasia Barrino at Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade
Ryan Cabrera at Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade
Julie Roberts at Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade
Steve Irwin at Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade

New York, November 23-25 – We’re thankful that celebrities don’t stop working even for the Thanksgiving holiday, so we ventured out between bites of turkey and TV football, and rustled up a holiday roundup.

Colin Farrell introduced a new “interactive Alexander Experience” at Madam Tussaud’s Times Square location on Tuesday, far enough in advance for visitors to regain their appetites by Thursday’s big feast. We’re not sure exactly what “interactive” means, but what can you do with a life-sized wax version of Colin Farrell? Anyway, Colin did what you’re all thinking, and lifted the Alexanderesque skirt, bent for a look and gave us a nod of approval, implying that the image is “authentic”. Check this out at your own risk.

More in the spirit of the holiday, Mariah Carey spent Thanksgiving eve serving up cornbread at a Fresh Air Fund dinner at a Brooklyn church. Mariah wore an apron embroidered with "Mimi", her alleged new name. She later sat at a table with the preacher and a little girl, and bopped along to a gospel choir concert.

The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade put a lot of hardworking celebs out on the street. Fantasia, Jimmy Smits, Jose Feliciano, Joe Namath, Barenaked Ladies and country-music sensation Julie Roberts all rode down Broadway on floats. Ryan Cabrera had the biggest hair. Steve Irwin, host of the cable TV show The Crocodile Hunter, rode astride a giant crocodile. Being Australian, he was no doubt not otherwise engaged on this solely American holiday.

Closer Premiere
Natalie Portman & Jude Law
Mike Nichols tries to spot Natalie Portman's pastie while Clive Owen & Jude Law look on

Los Angeles, November 22 – Natalie Portman’s publicist had us straining our eyes at the premiere of her new film, Closer, on Monday. While on the red carpet, the watchdog kept checking Natalie’s dress, and then issued orders to the press corps: “She’s wearing a flowered pastie. I think you can see it. If there are any pictures of it, they better not go anywhere.”

Despite being about six weeks from her due date, Sony flacks kept insisting that Julia Roberts would make an appearance. She didn’t, but costars Jude Law and Clive Owen were there. No word on what was covering their nipples.

Alexander Screening
Colin Farrell
Angelina Jolie
Jared Leto
New York, November 22 – The hotter cast members – Angelina Jolie, Colin Farrell, Rosario Dawson and Jared Leto – joined Oliver Stone for last night’s preview screening of Alexander at the Walter Reade Theater. Once past the red carpet and inside the theater lobby, with outer coats removed, Jolie suffered a wardrobe malfunction, her bra clearly visible under her black jacket. Jolie got very upset - "Lost it", according to our sources - and with the help of publicists, checked the displays on the cameras of the six-or-so photographers present, and made them erase the photos. Then she posed all over again, everything in place.

Jury Appreciation Day
Matthew Broderick & Sarah Jessica Parker
Conan O'Brien
New York, November 18 – We’re glad our trial wasn’t going on when the annual Jury Appreciation Day struck the New York State Courthouse in lower Manhattan. The boatload of celebs distracting jurors and jurists alike included Matthew Broderick and Sarah Jessica Parker, Rudy Giuliani, Anne Curry, Ally Sheedy, Leslie Uggams, Ivanka Trump, Michael Imperioli, Clive Davis and Rosanne Cash. No, we're not making this up, and there were more. Conan O’Brien revealed to jurors his method for getting out of jury service: “If they’ve [defendants] gotten this far in the system, you have to figure they’re guilty.”

Clive Davis' American Music Awards Party
Ashlee Simpson
Jessica Simpson & Nick Lachey
January Jones & Josh Groban
Clive Davis & Diana Ross
Eva Longoria & J.C. Chasez
Bijou Phillips & brother

Los Angeles, November 14 – Ashlee Simpson wasn’t even at the American Music Awards, but that didn’t stop her from hitting the after parties, including Teen People’s and Clive Davis’. Ashlee came with Nicky Hilton to Clive Davis’ Esquire House bash. Nicky’s good friend Bijou Phillips was at the party with her brother. Bijou was having a very good time. A very good time, indeed.

Ashlee’s sister Jessica Simpson, who was nominated for an AMA, came to the party with husband Nick Lachey; and the place was teeming with couples, including Eva Longoria and J.C. Chasez, Janet Jackson and Jermaine Dupri, Josh Groban and January Jones and Rod Stewart and Penny Lancaster. John Mayer’s date was British actress Rhona Mitra, and the two are reportedly a couple.

Others at the music-business legend’s party included Diana Ross, Usher, Toby Keith, Kenny G and ZZ Top.

American Music Awards
Gwen Stefani & posse
Usher
Anna Nicole Smith
Clay Aiken
Kenny Chesney
Linkin Park

Los Angeles, November 14 – We’re going backwards here, only now bringing you our very own special view of the American Music Awards. It’s been one of those weeks, we got sidetracked by the melee at the Vibe Awards and have been trying to catch up ever since.

Anyway, as you all know, Anna Nicole Smith stole the AMA show with her slurry introduction of Kanye West. But maybe you don’t know that Anna followed that stunning performance backstage in the pressroom with more rambling and marathon posing. Anna spent at least ten minutes working the cameras, and simply wouldn’t leave. When her handlers tried to literally drag her from the room, the paparazzi started chanting her name, and Anna pleaded, “I want to go back. I want to go back.” She did, and stayed until her people did physically drag her from the room. Oh, Anna’s necklace bears the slogan “Trimspa, Baby”, but she left before we found out where we could purchase our own.

The evening’s big winner, Usher, juggled his four awards in both arms. We asked him to remove his sunglasses, and rather than put the statues down, he had a member of his entourage take the shades from his face.

Gwen Stefani, in top hat and tutu, did actual setups with Japanese backup dancers on the red carpet. Her gigantic bodyguard blocked the group while Gwen’s manager and a guy from her record company set up their tableau, and only when satisfied, allowed photos. Then the little troupe packed up, moved six feet down the carpet, got back into position while being blocked from view - kind of like changing your clothes on the beach while your friends cover - and were again ready for closeups.
