Da Ali G Show Launch

David Blaine & friend   Vision in yellow, Ali G   Salman Rushdie

February 24 - America, Ali G is in da house. British comedian Sacha Baron Cohen's wildly popular Ali G Show will be unleashed on HBO starting this month. In the UK, the faux rapper has put high profile guests like former Democratic presidential candidate Michael Dukakis and right-wing former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich on the spot. Ali asked astronaut Buzz Aldrin, "So what was it like to walk on the sun?" Actor Alan Cumming, magician David Blaine and writer Salman Rushdie came out for HBO's sneak preview at club Lot 61. The buzz is that if the TV show is successful with American audiences, Ali G's 2002 film, Ali G Indahouse, will be released stateside. In the movie, Ali brings bling bling to the Houses of Parliament.

The 45th Annual Grammy Awards, The Parties

February 23 - The Grammy Awards ceremony sent February out with a celebrity-filled roar on Sunday. Nora Jones, who won five Grammy awards, really looked like she didn't know what hit her - truly a stunning evening for her. In person Nora does seem refreshingly unaffected by her newfound stardom - we hope she stays that way. Maybe after his run on Broadway in Hairspray, Harvey Fierstein should consider fashion consulting - he not only presented in full drag, but changed outfits a couple times, getting the attention of ladies' man Rod Stewart.

After the awards, stars played a frenzied game of party roulette, popping into throw downs hosted by BMG, Sony Music, EMI and Warner Music, just to name a few. Diana Ross was the evening's biggest surprise, appearing at several parties, trademark hair flowing, smiling but aloof. At Sony, award winners Bruce Springsteen and the Dixie Chicks huddled with their handlers, surrounded by security guards. These guys really know how to have fun! People with the most stamina headed downtown to celebrate late-late with Justin Timberlake and Nelly at Capitale.

February 22 - Twas the night before the Grammy's and all through the town, creatures were rocking. Clive Davis' legendary pre-Grammy Awards party was the big ticket on Saturday night. The Wall Street Regent Hotel was up to its chandeliers in an ocean of talent too deep to list here. Aretha Franklin, Justin Timberlake, Rod Stewart, Alicia Keys and Lou Reed all took the stage. Despite tight security and A-list glamour, Davis managed to keep the vibe low key and downright friendly.

The Roseland Ballroom was home to a double whammy. Peter Gabriel, Alanis Morissette and Chuck D were honored with MTV's Rock the Vote Awards. British pop star Robbie Williams, Vanessa Carlton, The Flaming Lips and Chuck D's rap group Public Enemy rocked the crowd. Everyone wondered where Kylie Minogue went this evening. We found her here.

Blender magazine took over the venue at midnight for the most spontaneous event of the evening. Kid Rock, Dave Navarro, Slash, Melissa Etheridge and Gavin Rossdale jammed on into the morning. Actress Gina Gershon, in skintight jeans and leather vest, jumped onstage and danced all night.

2003 MusiCares Person of the Year Tribute to Bono

Dixie Chicks   Person of the year Bono with REM's Michael Stipe   Kim Cattrall & Mary J. Blige

February 21 - MusiCares named Bono 2003 Person of the Year for his accomplishments as a musician and as a humanitarian. And what a tribute this was, with a stunning guest list from the worlds of music, film and politics. Robert DeNiro, Gwen Stefani and No Doubt, Tony Bennett, B. B. King, the Dixie Chicks, Michael Stipe, Ashley and Wynonna Judd, Christian Slater, Norah Jones, Elvis Costello, David Bowie, Bonnie Raitt, Sheryl Crow, Kim Cattrall, Mary J. Blige, Bill Clinton, Aretha Franklin and The Edge attended, and many performed. A late night party at the Hudson Hotel followed. Made the Grammy Awards look like amateur night.

2nd Tribeca Film Festival Announced, Six Feet Under's New Season Launches

February 19-20 - Billionaire New York Mayor Mike Bloomberg is disappointed that a film in which he plays a secret agent busting a hacker in London wasn't selected for the second annual Tribeca Film Festival. Even so, Bloomberg joined Robert DeNiro, Jane Rosenthal and Kevin Spacey to formally announce the festival, running from May 3 - 11. Taciturn festival founder DeNiro said, "I have one thing to say: come on down." Co-founder Rosenthal told us she believes there's room for two, and that the Tribeca fest will only enhance the 40-year-old New York Film Festival. We'd like to hear the NYFF's opinion. Oscar winner Spacey is on the Tribeca Film Institute board, and some films from his mentoring program, Triggersreet.com, have been accepted into the Tribeca festival. Maybe Bloomberg will try that route next year.

HBO introduced the new season of mega-hit Six Feet Under with a screening of the first two episodes. The entire cast plus assorted Celebs showed up for a sneak peak at the quirky funeral home family drama. Fans of the wildly popular show can greet death weekly beginning March 2.

February 6 - 15 - Maybe it's the Iraq situation or the fashions are just plain scary, but New York's fall 2003 Fashion Week was celebrity-lite. Women's Wear Daily's Monday headline, "Attack of the Killer B's", referred to the B-listers attending the shows. Never fear, the intrepid Open All Night team sifted through the riff raff and found whoever was to be seen. We applied our unique scoring method to the runway shows, and came up with the winners.

Our system excludes repetitions: rap diva Eve, rap mogul Damon Dash, and actresses Hilary Swank, Claire Danes, Kim Cattrall and Rosario Dawson made multiple front row appearances. Marc Jacobs came in first with Liv Tyler, Gina Gershon, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Kristin Davis, Jimmy Fallon, P. Diddy, Sofia Coppola and Drea DeMatteo. Runner up is Sean John with Kelly Osbourne, Mary J. Blige, Macy Gray and Kelly Ripa.

Our celebrity meter beeped for Sarah Jessica Parker at Narciso Rodriguez, Craig David at Luca Luca, Camron and Alicia Keys at Baby Phat, Patti LaBelle and Wyclef Jean at his wife's label Fusha, and Renee Zellweger at Calvin Klein. We also spotted the first fashionista, W daughter Barbara Bush, at Zac Posen.

Eve is such a fashion hound that she changed designer blouses between Carlos Miele's show and Narciso Rodriguez's an hour later. Backstage at Narciso, we confronted Hilary Swank, self-professed Marc Jacobs girl, who stammered, "Um, well, I'll always be a Marc Jacobs girl at heart. You know, I love Marc, and I…. it doesn't mean there's not room for others. My heart's big." Harvey Keitel and ex-wife Lorraine Bracco avoided each other at Imitation of Christ, where their daughter Stella modeled. Bracco said to her companion, "My ex-husband's here. I don't mind, but the media….". (Ahem.) Icy cordiality ruled when Harvey's current wife Daphna introduced herself to Bracco.
