New York, November 1, 2007 – Ten years ago the then Boston-based metal outfit Isis formed around the nucleus of Aaron Turner, Aaron Harris, and Jeffrey Caxide. Ten years, four full length albums, 4 live albums, 4 EP's, 1 DVD, and scores of remixes, tens of thousands of miles on tour, and relocated to Los Angeles, and Isis are back on the road for a small two and half week tour to celebrate their decade. Their sound has refined over the years from the brash and pummeling guitars of Red Sea (1999) to the expansive and frequently melodic In the Absence of Truth (2006), but the constant throughout has been their commitment to the live performance and its meditative high volumes – note zen-like expressions of guitarist Mike Gallagher and keyboardist/guitarist Cliff Meyer! Thursday's New York show was no exception as they effortlessly navigated their decade-long back catalogue from the recent jams to a vintage encore rendition of the song "Red Sea." At the Fillmore, Maria Christopher of the band 27 joined Isis for the song “Weight”; she originally sang the version on Isis’ 2002 album Oceanic. Earlier in the evening Eugene Robinson and Oxbow riled up the crowd with their sound that is the heaviest weird this side of Miles Davis. How exactly did Eugene wind up a crowd of metal heads? Easy...he stripped to his underwear! Photos, text by Damien Neva |
