New York, July 11, 2007 - Ex Models gave Wednesday night's Bowery Ballroom crowd a glimpse of the future. Sure, they play nearly every month in New York and it certainly wouldn't be daft to wonder what makes opening for Atlanta's Deerhunter so special. However, just as a fully formed Voltron inspires awe, so too does a fully formed Zoo Psychology era Ex Models lineup of Shahin Motia, Zach Lehrhoff, Shahryar Motia, and Jake Fiedler, who haven’t worked together in a few years. While drummer Kid Millions had been playing with Shahin and Zach since Chrome Panthers was released in 2005, according to guitarist and vocalist Shahin Motia, Wednesday’s show was the first time in the last couple of years that all members of this earlier Ex Models incarnation were available. Perfect timing, since Zach wanted to play some of their older tunes and didn't feel like teaching any new recruits. And play older tunes they did, in the way of "Sex Automata," "Girlfriend Is Worse," and "Brand New Panties." Despite their hiatus from the band, Shahryar and Jake sounded like they had never missed a day, let alone a beat. Although this vintage lineup harkens back to 2004, it does so with an eye on what's to come from Ex Models. Shahin said it was the four guys on stage Wednesday night that will be writing and recording the next Ex Models album. Look for it in the next year.- Damien Neva |
