New York, June 4, 2007 – “My biggest fashion disaster was one year at the Golden Globes”, Debra Messing told us at Monday’s CFDA Awards. “I was seven months pregnant, and from the morning to the night of the event, my stomach grew. So I had to leave the Golden Globes early because I couldn’t fit into my dress any more.” Open All Night dug up a photo of the pregnant Messing (at left) at the 2004 Golden Globes, and she looked terrific bursting out of that dress.

Anyway, in 2007 Messing was svelte enough to pass muster with the fashion world bigwigs at the CFDAs; she even had Michael Kors to personally adjust her evening gown. Kors’ other date was Heidi Klum, who chose her crystal-studded dress for the evening because it sparkled. “I’m German; I love sparkles”, Klum said.

At the CFDAs it was model Karen Elson who showed off a baby bump in a tight-fitting Zac Posen dress that she said was “definitely not hiding my pregnancy”. Elson declined to say when her second child with rocker husband Jack White is due.

A lot of us barely recognized Petra Nemcova who showed up as a blonde. She simply told us the new color was for a job, and did not elaborate. Vanessa Williams said that her Ugly Betty character, fashion editor Wilhelmina Slater, has a much more “buttoned up” style than the real Williams. (Williams is heartbroken that her kidnapped dog Enzo has not yet been found.)

Watching Oprah Winfrey walk the red carpet, Sean “Diddy” Combs recalled his Broadway debut in “Raisin in the Sun”, when the talk show queen attended opening night. “I didn’t know she was coming. And then the standing ovation, seeing her was a powerful moment for me”, he said.

Oprah rearranged her schedule when designer Ralph Lauren asked her to present his American Fashion Legend award. “He is the definition of cool”, Oprah said of Lauren. “With style, with elegance, and a sense of conscience”.

Also in the glittering crowd at the New York Public Library for the fashion bash: Eva Mendes, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, David Bowie and Iman, Claire Danes and her new man, Hugh Dancy, Jane Krakowski, Duncan Sheik, Alicia Keys and Chloe Sevigny.
