Laurie Anderson Takes High Line Fest to New Heights

New York, May 18, 2007 – Laurie Anderson played two concerts at the High Line Ballroom as a part of the High Line Festival, curated by David Bowie. The High Line Ballroom proved itself a decidedly terrestrial venue compared to her artist-in-residency with NASA a few years ago, but all the same Laurie Anderson's voice, signature electric violin, and intricate musical arrangements made it feel light-years beyond the Milky Way galaxy.

The expansive economy of modulating colored light, suspended incandescent light bulbs, and sophisticated live video manipulation/projection by Mark Coniglio proved the perfect foil to Anderson's songs, that deal with a wide range of topics, from the philosophical to the political.

Joining Anderson onstage were bassist Skuli Sversson, keyboardists Peter Scherer and Rob Burger, and violist Eyvind Kang, and they played for over ninety minutes without an encore. There was an almost David-Letterman-studio-like chill to the air, which I am not entirely sure was not by design for this newly opened club in the meatpacking district -- is it the neighborhood's history of keeping sides of beef on ice?

The net effect of Anderson's arresting performance and the cold air could well be likened to spending hours alone in an empty library or art museum – which is no mean feat inside the rumbling machine that is New York City.
