New York, May 18, 2007 – Laurie Anderson played two concerts at the High Line Ballroom as a part of the High Line Festival, curated by David Bowie. The High Line Ballroom proved itself a decidedly terrestrial venue compared to her artist-in-residency with NASA a few years ago, but all the same Laurie Anderson's voice, signature electric violin, and intricate musical arrangements made it feel light-years beyond the Milky Way galaxy. The expansive economy
of modulating colored light, suspended incandescent light bulbs, and sophisticated
live video manipulation/projection by Mark Coniglio proved
the perfect foil to Anderson's songs, that deal with a wide range of topics,
from the philosophical to the political. The net effect of
Anderson's arresting performance and the cold air could well be likened
to spending hours alone in an empty library or art museum – which
is no mean feat inside the rumbling machine that is New York City. Photos: Damien Neva |
