Los Angeles, May 19, 2007 – KROQ FM’s Weenie Roast had a Latin theme this year, with the catchy title “Weenie Roast y Fiesta”, and the gigantic, dorky sombreros that were everywhere came in handy – for protection from the hot sun. 30 Seconds to Mars got into the spirit with Latin American folk dancers on the stage, and frontman Jared Leto wore one of the sombreros, probably to try to keep his heavy makeup from melting. Leto did remove the hat before climbing down and wading deep into the audience.

We'd heard that The Killers’ lead singer Brandon Flowers had been ill, and upon arriving at the Verizon Wireless Ampitheater in Irvine. we found a sign stating that the band would not be performing. A different Brandon – Brandon Boyd – filled The Killers’ slot with his band Incubus.

Linkin Park, Queens of the Stone Age, Bad Religion, Social Distortion, Interpol and Korn were also in the fiesta lineup, but sans sombreros.

The audience was unusually free of celebrities.
