Washington, D.C., April 21, 2007 – We’ve noted before the relative lack of star power at the annual White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner during the Bush administration, which is not so popular in Hollywood. But at the 2007 dinner on Saturday, we were thrilled to find one really big star, Sanjaya Malakar, the guy with fabulous hair who just got fired from American Idol. (Seriously, all of the news outlets compete for guests at the Correspondents’ dinner, and the only person who probably received more invitations that Sanjaya had to be Anna Nicole Smith baby daddy Larry Birkhead. Sadly, we didn’t see him at there.)

A few other show biz types, like Sheryl Crow, Larry and Laurie David, Larry King, James Denton and Valerie Bertinelli looked on as comedian Rich Little and President George W. Bush both declined to be funny. Teri Hatcher arrived late and left early.

Politicians like Condoleezza Rice, Rudy Giuliani, Karl Rove, Homeland Security Chief Michael Chertoff, CIA director Michael Hayden, and presidential hopeful Mitt Romney all came to dinner. Embattled U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales took a breather from being grilled by the Senate Judiciary Committee to chow down with the White House scribes. And at the Costa Rican embassy where Bloomberg News threw their after party, we met scandal-plagued World Bank head Paul Woflowitz, who is currently being investigated by the bank’s directors for bestowing his girlfriend, Shaha Riza, with suspect business favors, including a large pay raise.
