New York, April 14, 2007 – On Saturday, we came upon renowned artist Richard Serra in the process of installing one of his grand scale sculptures in the Museum of Modern Art’s garden. Serra’s creations are so massive that they’ve been compared to architecture, and so the entire block of West 54th Street in Manhattan was blocked by an enormous crane, and the 67-year-old artist directed a team of workers in lifting the piece over the garden wall. Once inside the museum garden, the ground was not level, causing some tense discussions as to how to soundly settle the sculpture. Serra became exasperated with a radio interviewer who repeatedly asked about “dropping” his pieces. “We don’t drop it; we set it”, Serra corrected more than once. The work is part of a retrospective at MoMA, “Richard Serra Sculpture: 40 Years”, which opens on June 3. |
