New York, April 9, 2007 – If Peeping Tom is the latest
Mike Patton vehicle, then this ride most certainly comes
equipped with a lowered suspension, neon undercarriage, and a pair of dangling
fuzzy dice, and could be seen double-parked outside Irving Plaza Monday
night for a sold-out show. Peeping Tom is by far the most pop-oriented project
yet for Mike Patton, whose already impressive CV includes bands Faith
No More, Mr. Bungle, Fantômas,
Tomahawk, and collaborations with Melvins,
Björk, Norah Jones, Massive
Attack, Rahzel, Dillinger Escape Plan,
Handsome Boy Modeling School, John Zorn,
Merzbow, and countless others. Peeping Tom's pedigree of R&B, hip hop, bossa nova, metal, and punk was well represented on stage by Brooklyn's Dub Trio, vocalist and violinist Imani Coppola, and beatboxer extraordinaire Antoinette "Butterscotch" Clinton. Peeping Tom also enlisted Dan the Automator to ride shotgun on the turntables cum wet bar, where he cut records and, using a bottle of Grey Goose, coolly mixed vodka Red Bulls for himself and the other performers on stage. Despite Dan's "drinking and driving," his beats and cuts kept pace with the demanding tempo changes, pitch modulations, and vocal stylings of Mike Patton. "Are you having fun, New York," asked Patton, "because you're looking confused." Confused they weren't, however as they were singing along to what are arguably some of the best-written choruses in pop music today. His cheekiness continued throughout the night when he asked if the crowd would rather attend another concert such as, say, My Chemical Romance. The crowd stayed put, as did Patton's double-parked vehicle. - Damien Neva |
