New York, February 16, 2007 – James Nachtwey, sometimes called “The War Photographer”, came in from the battlefield long enough to celebrate his latest exhibition, “The Sacrifice”, at a star-studded opening on Friday evening. We found Michael Stipe, actor Josh Lucas and Mikhail Baryshnikov mingling with art world insiders at the packed party at 401 Projects, the gallery space owned by Mark Seliger, the man responsible for famous photos like that of the Red Hot Chili Peppers wearing only socks.

“This is an incredible exhibition which James has put together” host Petra Nemcova told us, gesturing at the powerful images. “He’s documenting the lives of people trying to save soldiers, but also of the soldiers recovering; the healing process of recovery”. Ten wounded Iraq war veterans were flown in from Brooke Army Medical Center specially to attend the opening, and proceeds from sales of the photos benefit Operation Comfort and Homes For Our Troops.

Nachtwey, who has spent much of his career in war zones and was injured in a Baghdad grenade blast in 2003, denied that he is addicted to danger. About this new collection, he said, “I wanted to do this story because I thought it was important to show people what the cost of the war is in human terms. So, you know, that’s my hope.”

The Sacrifice is open thru April 8, 2007. For info. contact 401 Projects.
