New York, December 3, 2006 – “I have a letter to read”, Terrence Howard announced during the Museum of the Moving Image salute to Will Smith. The dinner guests at the Waldorf-Astoria listened politely as Howard read the following missive: "Dear Will, There is nothing more befitting than celebrating you and your work that you have given so much to so many. I’ve seen all of your films, and I have the benefit and good fortune of knowing you personally, which gives me an even keener insight and appreciation for you and the consummate artist that you are. My respect for you is boundless. You make it look easy, but I know firsthand the depth of your commitment, your dedication to create something special for all of us. So as your friend, as your contemporary, and one who loves your films, I am honored to take this opportunity to tip my hat to you in thanks and deep admiration. Much love, That last bit got everyone’s attention. It was an evening filled with heartfelt congratulations and jabs. Jada Pinkett Smith choked up during her speech, but the mood got lighter when she introduced son Jaden, who costars in Will’s new movie. The eight-year-old was brief: “I would like to say, daddy, in The Pursuit of Happyness, you were a real good actor. But I taught you everything you know.” We chatted earlier with Happyness director Gabriele
Muccino, who can’t believe that Will Smith chose him for
the project. “He was so brave, and also so insane”, Muccino
told us, speaking with a charming Italian accent. “This was my first
English language movie, so you have really to be brave to hire someone
like that”, he added. At evening’s end, he accepted his trophy and quipped, “Of all of the awards I’ve received, this is the most recent.” Watch this show on Jan. 12, 2007, on Bravo |
