Naomi Campbell Arrested, Covers Up With Poncho
Naomi Campbell exiting the Midtown North Police Precinct in Manhattan. The poncho keeps her hands covered, so we cannot tell if she is handcuffed.

New York, March 30, 2006 - Breaking -12:28 PM EST - Open All Night has learned that Supermodel Naomi Campbell is in police custody at Midtown North Precinct in Manhattan.

Details are vague at this time, but sources say Campbell was taken into custody at her Manhattan apartment. A NYPD official told us that she was brought into the precint in handcuffs at about 12 noon today, and that Campbell will be booked.

NYPD officials would not discuss the case, and said that a statement will be released.

According to Gawker.com Campbell was arrested for assault.

UPDATE 1:33 PM - As we await more news on this case, ten video crews, 25 photographers and over a dozen reporters have gathered in front of the police station where Naomi Campbell is being held. The warm, sunny afternoon is pleasant for waiting around.

UPDATE 4:10 PM - Naomi Campbell left the Midtown North Precinct, fashionably dressed in a white poncho that would conveniently cover any handcuffs. Over 100 media professionals greeted her. Campbell's rep stated that Campbell was treated well by the police, and that she is innocent, and will be exonerated.

UPDATE 4:45 PM - Campbell arrived at the courthouse at 100 Centre Street for arraignment, still wearing the white poncho.

UPDATE 5:37 PM - Insiders report that Campbell is sitting alone in detention - meaning that she is not in a cell with other detainees - downstairs in the criminal court building in lower Manhattan. The judge is not in at the moment, and lawyers said they do not yet know when she will be released.

UPDATE 6:57 PM - Naomi Campbell has been released on her own recognizance, and has been allowed to retain her passport. A reporter inside the courtroom told us that Campbell's lawyer used a Nelson Mandela strategy, arguing that since Naomi is scheduled to do charity work with Mandela in South Africa, it wouldn't be fair to the children she's aiding, and so she should be permitted to keep her passport. It worked.

Naomi is due back in court on June 27, 2006.

UPDATE 7:10 PM - Naomi Campbell left the courthouse. She said a few words to reporters as she ran to her car. She was still wearing the poncho.
