Los Angeles, July 17-18 - Ah, it's the middle of July, and America is focused on baseball, except in Southern California, where fans went crazy for football this weekend. Real Madrid, best known on this side of the Atlantic as David Beckham's soccer team, did a whirlwind tour of L.A, culminating in a Monday night game against the Los Angeles Galaxy. Some details of the quick tour: The Real Madrid team arrived on a flight from Chicago at 10:30 A.M. on Sunday, went directly to a Sport Chalet store in Marina del Rey, where they signed autographs for an hour or so. Then it was off to the Ritz Carlton, where guests lounging at the pool probably felt really out of shape when the soccer players went for a swim. Later, David Beckham stopped at an In-N-Out Burger to chow down on a Double-Double; he graciously signed autographs and posed for photos with kids in the store. Next, the whole team was late for a training session at the Home Depot Center, for which fans had bought tickets. Later, it was off to club Prey in Hollywood. Monday the footballers played to a sold-out stadium, and while fans love Beckham, they roared the loudest for Portuguese star Luis Figo. Alas, the Europeans saved face, beating the upstart Americans, 2-0.
