New York, July 21 – Reader’s Digest celebrated its 1,000th issue with a future-themed party at a downtown warehouse space, complete with a walking, talking, dancing, smart-mouthed robot greeting guests at the door. Maggie Gyllenhaal and Christian Slater were honorary guest DJs. Alicia Keys was surprised to hear this, but immediately got into the spirit, saying that if she doesn’t love what Slater plays, she’ll “make really good fun of him”. (We never did find out what Alicia thought of the evening’s music picks.) While Reader’s Digest is looking toward the future, and trying to “stay relevant”, as one rep put it, we’re certain that other, more glamorous publications would be thrilled to have RD’s 10 million-ish circulation and 83-year track record. We also know for a fact that many partygoers wanted to take home that sassy robot, if it cleans houses. |
