New York, June 5 – Gosh, what with Russell Crowe throwing telephones and Tom Cruise hijacking the Batman Begins premiere, we haven’t even had time to tell you about the Tony Awards. You may not have noticed it on TV, but the mood at Radio City Music Hall was somehow more subdued than in previous years. But we’ve got some gossip anyway. This was some weekend for Billy Crystal. Not only did he win his first Tony award for his one-man show, 700 Sundays, the previous day he and wife Janice celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary. The show closes on June 12, but Crystal said he’s considering what to do with it, possibly even taking it to London. “It will continue in some way. I am fascinated by taking it to the West End, and seeing how this family would play there.” Liev Schreiber said of Glengarry Glen Ross, for which he won a Tony, “This was the first Broadway show that my father took me to see, 20 years ago.” Matthew Broderick told us that he and Nathan Lane won’t start shooting their movie The Odd Couple until early September. Speaking of odd couples, Schreiber's lady friend Naomi Watts slipped into the Tonys, as did Claire Danes, whose guy Billy Crudup was a nominee. Rehearsals for the live telecast went on for several days, complete with swag suites and a "Tony spa hideaway" suite. On show day, Doris Roberts was late for her afternoon manicure and massage, and Marcia Cross never got there, thanks to the Israeli Day parade, which snarled traffic. Angela Bassett and Bernadette Peters got backstage massages pre-show, and Jeff Goldblum personally thanked organizer Spa Chicks for a gift basket sent to his hotel room. |
