New York, June 4-10 – The biggiest shocker this week was Katie Holmes’ appearance on David Letterman’s show. No, we don’t mean the fact that she couldn’t recall how she met Tom Cruise, when Dave asked. We mean the fact that Katie was there ALONE, by herself, without Tom. We don’t know how these cute kids could stand being apart. Expect the happy couple to make up for those two hours of separateness with an even more intense make out session at their next public appearance together.

Shakira brought Times Square to a standstill on Wednesday when she appeared at the Virgin Megastore to promote her new recording. The crowds were enormous, and a Virgin employee told us that there were way more people than when Jennifer Lopez appeared at the store last March.

We got all excited about Usher’s “New Look” press conference, expecting the R&B heartthrob to veer off into a wild new fashion direction. But it turned out to be a nonprofit organization to benefit underprivileged youth. We’re totally signing up to learn how to be super-good looking, have a great singing voice and sell millions of records.

So many pretty people, so little gossip. What can we say about the Council of Fashion Designers of America awards, a rather boring event with a huge guest list? David Bowie, Sarah Michelle Gellar, P. Diddy, Mandy Moore, Eva Mendes and Claire Danes were all in the New York Public Library at the same time, and we have no funny stories. Even pregnant, Heidi Klum looks sensational. We’re aware of the irony that though the CFDA celebrates American fashion, the people in the photos we’ve included from the event, at left – Catherine Deneuve, Gilles Bensimon, Seal, Heidi Klum and Kate Moss - are all Europeans.
