May 31-June 4 – British soccer star David Beckham made a whirlwind visit to the U.S. this week, and Open All Night was all over him like skin on a football. After ruining our Memorial Day holiday with his press conference and training session, Beckham led England to victory in an exhibition game against Colombia. (And no, we have no idea why this game was played in the U.S.) Americans even got a little taste of the soccer world’s infamous hooligans when shouting fans started tossing empty beer bottles back and forth at game’s end; Meadowlands security stood by, reluctant to get involved in an international conflict. Fortunately, the bottles were plastic.

During the game, there was a moment of tension when Beckham took an elbow to the noggin; he held his head for a while, but seemed fine. Fast at grooming for a noted dandy, Beckham emerged from the locker room within thirty minutes after the game wearing a natty suit, signed autographs and then, ignoring the team bus waiting nearby, left in a black SUV.

If you tried to shop at the Adidas store on Houston Street on Wednesday morning, you were out of luck. The store was closed to the public until 2 P.M. so that Beckham could unveil his new $210, silver-colored soccer boot.

The next day in L.A. the soccer star launched the David Beckham Soccer Academy, which he said he’s worked very closely on, and added that he’ll pay the tuition for the first 300 students who learn to bend it.

In addition to soccer boots on your feet, you can wear Beckham on your bum. David’s wife Victoria Beckham stopped in at trendy boutique Kitson to promote her line of jeans from Rock and Republic. A fifteen-car paparazzi caravan trailed Victoria’s car all the way from R&R’s Culver City showrooms to the store on Robertson Blvd. in L.A.
