Los Angeles, February 13 – Well, most of you were watching Desperate Housewives or going out for Chinese on Sunday, but the Grammy Awards telecast was on CBS that night too. And Ray Charles swept the Grammys with eight wins, including best album for Genius Loves Company, and best record for his duet with Norah Jones. This has been quite a year for Mr. Charles, with all these music awards, dying, and being the subject of an Oscar-nominated biopic.

Jamie Foxx, who claimed he didn’t sing much in the movie Ray, got to warble with Alicia Keys this evening, and Bonnie Raitt and Billy Preston also paid tribute to Charles on the show. We’ll leave the reviews to the critics, but Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony left New York late Friday evening for L.A., to prepare for their first-ever duet on the Grammys program.

There’s been some criticism that the show tried to please too many, with diverse performances in all genres from country to hip-hop, but we have to say we enjoyed the chance to hear acts like Green Day, Gretchen Wilson and Melissa Etheridge sing. Etheridge, who lost her hair during recent breast cancer treatments, said that she was initially reluctant to appear on the show. She decided to go ahead, and inadvertently became a hero to cancer patients. Another cancer survivor, athlete Lance Armstrong, presented an award along with his lady, Sheryl Crow. Crow said the couple intended to leave the next morning for a Valentine’s Day getaway in the Napa Valley, but might not be able to wake up early after hitting several Grammy after-parties.
