New York, January 11 – “There’s a new category, ‘Best Film Without Jude Law In It’”, quipped Jon Favreau, host of the 2004 National Board of Review Awards Gala. In fact, since the NBR awards are all pre-announced, instead of teary, shocked, too-long acceptance speeches, everyone was a comedian, delivering funny, heartfelt, too-long acceptance speeches.

Clint Eastwood: “I think that Kevin Bacon is one of the finest younger actors around. Of course, anybody under 50 is younger to me.” Michael Moore on his Fahrenheit 9/11 award: "I’ll skip the part about Mr. Eisner trying to put the movie on the shelf, and how he’s ringing me now.” Breakthrough performance awardee Topher Grace revealed how he honed his acting chops: “I never went to an acting class”.

Famed Broadway producer George C. Wolfe had a part in directorial debut-winner Zach Braff’s film Garden State. Braff told the crowd, “I heard that George was directing A Midsummer Night’s Dream at Shakespeare in the Park this summer, and I was so excited about it that when I saw him tonight, I ran up to him and said, ‘George, I’d make an amazing Bottom!’ So we had an awkward moment there.”

Presenting quirky writer Charlie Kaufman with an award for Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Rosie Perez told a rambling but hilarious tale of their mutual sexual attraction while working together on 2001’s Human Nature.

Also roaming around Tavern on the Green were Kyra Sedgwick, Javier Bardem, Jeremy Irons, Emmy Rossum, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Sigourney Weaver, Virginia Madsen, Daniel Day-Lewis, Nicolas Cage and Jeff Bridges. Annette Bening told us that Warren Beatty stayed in California with their kids to keep an eye on their house during the violent weather.
