Los
Angeles, October 10-11–If you’re looking for well-heeled
dates, you should have been at the Elton John
AIDS Foundation’s Smash Hits events on Sunday and Monday.
Someone bid $16,000 for lunch with Anna Kournikova,
a couple of people purchased $20,000 tennis lessons with Andy
Roddick, and three private dinners with Elton John
at one of his homes went for $100,000 each. Oh yes, and these
bidders had already paid $2,500 apiece for the kickoff evening,
where they rubbed elbows with the tennis pros, Josh
Groban, January Jones and Neve
Campbell at dinner and concert by Sir Elton. Kournikova
didn’t want to move around too much because her dress
was held up with a safety pin, but she was ready for action
at the next day’s tennis matches, where she sang and
danced whenever her boyrfiend Enrique Iglesias’
songs were played.
When,
during a tennis match, an onlooker shouted that his serve
looked faster on television, Roddick brought the heckler down
onto the court and served him a few balls, which the guy couldn’t
return. After the third serve, he surrendered by waving a
white hanky.
Later,
Roddick embraced the referee after a favorable call, and told
his opponent, Andre Agassi, that the (much
older) ref was his girl. When the ref called the next serve
in Agassi’s favor, he asked Roddick, “What do
you think of your girlfriend now?” “We broke up”,
came the reply.
