New
York, Sept. 11-14 – New York Fashion Week raged on with
some big names ogling the models, er, we mean checking out
the latest styles. Front row at Luca Luca, a gum-chomping
Jessica Simpson sat alongside Anne
Hathaway, Mary Louise Parker with
a handsome date, and OC queen Mischa Barton
with her beau Brandon Davis. The billionaire
Davis told us he was wearing Christian Dior, his favorite
designer. Backstage after the Luca Luca show, R&B superstar
R. Kelly, charged with child pornography,
behaved like a gentleman, even while surrounded by half-dressed
teenaged models.
At Jennifer
Nicholson’s show, the designer’s father,
Jack Nicholson chatted and laughed with David
Blaine in the next seat, and nodded approvingly as
the pretty (and skinny) models sashayed by. (But surely he
was concentrating on the dresses.) We asked the Oscar-winner
if he’s become a fashion fan now that it’s in
the family. “I’m a fan of my daughter’s”,
Jack replied, and then told us about his favorite fashion
show ever. “You know, listen - Galliano,
Dior - the greatest fashion show of all time was before the
World Cup in France.” Really? “You should have
seen that one! Yves St. Laurent did, like, three outfits for
every country. Unbelievable.” Wow. What year was that?
“2000, I think. Maybe longer back. Two World Cups back.”
(It was in 1998, for the record.)
Kimora
Lee Simmons’ Baby Phat show was chaotic and
star-studded - Janet Jackson, J.C.
Chasez, Lil’ Kim,
Vivica Fox, Mary J. Blige and Ja
Rule – as usual. Held on Sept. 11, the message,
“Remember America’s heroes. 9/11/01”, was
projected on the walls as the room filled up. Kimora also
acknowledged a personal tribulation, closing the show with
a string of models all wearing jeans with tank tops bearing
the designer’s mug shot from her recent marijuana arrest.
Marc
Jacobs wore the celebrity crown this season, drawing
Winona Ryder, Kate Hudson,
a preggers Liv Tyler, the Olsens,
Mandy Moore, Jennifer Lopez,
Marc Anthony and many others out to a pier
on the river in Greenwich Village.
On the
final night, we stumbled onto a rocking fashion show by label
Buddhist Punk, at the Maritime Hotel. Incense was burning,
the show opened with taped chanting, a woman did a song accompanied
by two live drummers, and then Elizabeth Jagger,
Alexandra and Theodora Richards,
Gina Gershon and rocker boys vamped and laughed
on the runway in the pirate-themed duds. Rock n’ roll
photographer Mick Rock bounced to blasting
music while Boy George, Fisher Stevens,
Patti Hansen and Rosario Dawson
looked on. We caught up with Steven Tyler
and wife Teresa after the show, who enthused,
“That was the best! It’s the last one [fashion
show] we’re going to, and I’m glad.”
