10-11 – World leaders arrived en masse in Washington,
D.C. for the state funeral of Ronald Reagan. On Thursday,
dignitaries and just average folks paid their respects at
the Capital Rotunda, where the former U.S. president’s
casket lay in state. It was cool and misty on Friday morning,
when President George W. Bush, Vice President
Dick Cheney, former presidents Bill
Clinton, the senior George Bush
and Jimmy Carter packed the first rows at
the memorial service at the National Cathedral. Along with
sadness, many people seemed to be greeting an old friend they
hadn't seen for ten years, since Reagan became housebound
with Alzheimer's disease.
Immediately
following the state funeral, the Reagan family flew to the
Reagan Presidential Library and Museum in Simi Valley, CA,
where the body was laid to rest later the same day. The library
is surrounded by 700 acres of wilderness. There were about
800 people at this more “private” service.
