New
York, June 28 – The Ziegfeld Theater was done up like
a medieval castle for the premiere of King Arthur,
complete with live horses guarding the entrance, knights stationed
along the red carpet, strolling musicians and even a live
parrot. The accents of the British cast added to the Arthurian
atmosphere. The Entertainment Tonight correspondent
next to us asked everyone to comment on the top news story
of the moment. No, not the handing-over of Iraq, silly. Britney
Spears’ engagement. Nonplussed by the question,
everybody from Star Jones to Keira
Knightley, the film’s Guinevere, genially offered
congratulations and good-for-hers. For a while, our favorite
reaction to Britney’s betrothal came from young Hugh
Dancy, who plays Galahad: “Well, I may as well
go and kill myself, then”. Until, that is, the reporter
asked Arthur himself, Clive Owen, “The
one news story I have to ask you about is Britney Spears.
Do you have any comment on that?” “I don’t
know what that is”, came the reply. “She just
got engaged again”, the reporter explained patiently.
“Alright”. Owen said, and walked away.
