Los
Angeles, June 7-13– “Meryl Streep
is, of course, god”, playwright Tony Kushner
once told us, ecstatic about snagging the two-time Oscar winner
for HBO’s adaptation of his play Angels in America.
And A-List Hollywood - Jim Carrey, Shirley
MacLaine, Goldie Hawn, Robert
DeNiro, Adrien Brody and Charlize
Theron, to name a few - made a pilgrimage to the
shrine on Thursday when Streep was honored with the American
Film Institute’s life achievement award. The talented
Streep, who in person seems so, well, normal, even brought
her husband and four children, rarely in the limelight. (It’s
a good thing that she also brought her Leica camera to record
the event for her scrapbook, because other than the 2,000
or so journalists, there was hardly anyone taking photos.)
Accolades from Streep’s costars and directors piled
so high, that when accepting the award from Jack Nicholson,
she joked about overdosing on tributes. You can get your own
love overload on June 21, when the ceremony airs on USA Network.
A smaller
crowd was at The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences
the previous day for the premiere of The Terminal.
Stars Tom Hanks, Catherine Zeta-Jones
and Stanley Tucci hosted, and Steven
Spielberg, Ray Romano and Nia
Vardalos all had first class seats for the airport-themed
romantic comedy.
Jeff
Bridges stipulated that the premiere of The Door
in the Floor, based on Jon Irving’s novel A
Widow for One Year, be held in his hometown of Santa
Barbara. So Mimi Rogers, Kim Basinger,
Bijou Phillips and Michael Keaton
schlepped up the coast on Sunday. As did we. At least they
fed everyone after the long drive, with a pre-party at Nu.
Finally,
Guy Pearce looked like he’s been spending
way too much time with wild animals, at the premiere of his
wilderness adventure flick, Two Brothers.
