Aretha Franklin's 4th of July Performance

Aretha Franklin performing in Times Square

New York, June 26 – EXCLUSIVE –Trying to keep some element of surprise to its Fourth of July concert special, NBC has been shooting segments around NYC unannounced. We caught Sheryl Crow’s performance back on June 9, and this time it was Aretha Franklin singing smack in the middle of Times Square on Saturday night. (Don’t ask what we were doing in Times Square on Saturday night, OK?) Drivers stopped their cars to the point where only one lane was getting by, and a sea of tourists gaped as Ms. Franklin did one song, My Country ‘Tis of Thee. After a sound check, the diva came out of a trailer parked in front of MTV’s studios, did the song twice, and, satisfied, left the stage, and they broke down the set. Sorry for spilling the beans, NBC.
