New
York, May 14 – It was after 2 A.M. Friday night when
Open All Night finally left the Brooklyn waterfront where
Kate Winslet, James Gandolfini and
Steve Buscemi shot scenes from their upcoming
musical, Romance & Cigarettes. The mood on the
set was light, almost giddy, even with director John
Turturro running around animatedly, as though wired
on ten cups of coffee. Buscemi wore his actual helmet from
the early 1980s, when he was a firefighter at Ladder 55 in
Little Italy. Gandolfini, who also plays a firefighter in
the film, was winded from running up and down ladders and
schlepping gigantic fire hoses. “I’m going to
have a heart attack keeping up with you guys”, he joked.
Winslet arrived at the Red Hook set with her husband, director
Sam Mendes, huddled on set in a black coat
until 11:30, then disappeared and returned after 1 A.M. in
a clingy red dress to shoot a dance sequence, which they wrapped
in only three takes. To music from the Buena Vista Social
club, she led the firemen in a conga line down the darkened
street until they were out of sight. A high-spirited Gandolfini
called a race, and they all sprinted back to the set.
